Patrick Idstein to Return to Classroom Teaching at STM for 2024-25 School Year

Patrick Idstein, who has served as St. Thomas More’s principal since July 2022, has decided to leave his administrative role and rejoin the STM faculty. Idstein will return to his previous role as a social sciences teacher for the 2024-25 school year, continuing as principal until June 2024.

Idstein started at STM during the 2011-12 school year as a student teacher and joined the school’s social sciences department full-time the following year. After eight years as a faculty member, he became STM’s dean of academics in 2020 and assumed the principal role after Joel Eul’s (TM ’79) retirement in 2022.

“Leaving the classroom to join the administration was a difficult decision, and I’ve missed working regularly with the students,” Idstein explained. “Building a sense of community within a classroom, breaking down challenging concepts, and seeing students grow over time are some of the most rewarding aspects of education.”

Rather than resuming his teaching career at another school, Idstein wanted to continue in the classroom at STM, where he has witnessed firsthand the impact of a compassionate Catholic education.

“STM brings together students from all walks of life to a school where they are challenged to grow spiritually, academically, and socially,” continued Idstein, who has also coached cross country and track & field at STM. “Our phenomenal faculty and staff go the extra mile to assist each and every student, helping them become the best versions of themselves.”

“After several years as a highly respected faculty member, Pat helped guide our school through one of the most challenging periods in US educational history during the Covid pandemic, first as dean of academics and later as principal,” STM President John Hoch (TM ’87) said. “In my conversations with Pat over the past year, however, it was obvious that despite his selfless leadership, he truly missed being in the classroom with our students, and I am grateful that he decided to remain at STM.”
