Give MORE to Our Mission: Teacher Spotlight

During this month, as we honor veterans, St. Thomas More High School pays tribute to retired Navy Commander Sharon Tomski. Although her extraordinary military and academic background would impress anyone, Mrs. Tomski never seeks the spotlight. She quietly goes about her work in our science and engineering department, completely unassuming about a lifetime of remarkable distinctions.

Before her 24-year teaching career, Mrs. Tomski was as an instructor at the Navy Nuclear Power School, teaching officer and enlisted personnel the theoretical and scientific foundations of nuclear propulsion and reactor operation. She later served our nation as a counterterrorism intelligence officer and was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal for her leadership and analysis after the 9/11 attacks. Other accolades include earning a master’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, securing a U.S. Patent, and publishing a peer-reviewed article in the journal Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics.

Yet, you would never hear her boast about these accomplishments, including being named a Project Lead the Way Master Teacher. Instead, she quietly channels her exceptional research acumen and technical expertise into what matters most: her students. Her commitment extends far beyond the classroom walls. She serves as a Eucharistic Minister both at her parish and here at STM, has served on parish councils and school advisory boards as well as the Archbishop’s Task Force for Catholic Education and as a delegate at the Archdiocesan Synod. However, her proudest moments are when her students have successful careers and become men and women of Christ. In every aspect of her life, she leads with humility and faith.

St. Thomas More High School thanks Mrs. Tomski for her honorable service to our country and for her quiet, steadfast commitment to finding ways to give MORE to our mission every single day.
