The Physical Education/Health Department offers a variety of activity classes that strive to meet the needs of all students.  Emphasis on the development of a fitness lifestyle, lifetime leisure activities, team and individual sports and skill improvement blend together to allow the students to appreciate this part of the academic spectrum.




1500/01 Physical Education 9 - Grade 9 - 0.5 credit (Required)
Introduction to a variety of individual and team physical activities, designed to promote interpersonal and social development along with cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance.  The student will experience and develop an appreciation for the skills, as well as the rules and strategies of each activity.

1502/03 Physical Education 10 - Grade 10 - 0.5 credit (Required)
With Physical Education 9 serving as a base, this course continues to educate the student in the area of personal physical fitness, skill development, and an overall appreciation of a variety of team and individual activities.  Rules and strategies of each activity will also be reviewed and expanded upon.

1505 Health - Grade 10 - 0.5 credit (Required)
Throughout the course, the students participate in simple experiments, self-inventories, and activities that help them learn how to make healthy decisions in all areas of their daily lives - physical, mental, and social.  As they acquire knowledge and decision-making skills, they also grow in the confidence they need to take responsibility for their own health.  By the end of the course, the students will have an understanding of health and wellness and how to make it a lifelong habit.  Certification in American Red Cross Standard First Aid/CPR is also part of the class.

1506 Lifetime Sports and Fitness - Grades 11 & 12 - 0.5 credit (Elective)
A variety of sports and recreational activities are covered, including the skills, rules, and strategies.  Physical fitness is also incorporated into the class in order to condition the student as well as encourage and teach the value of lifetime fitness.  The student will have the opportunity to experience the following:

  • Ultimate Frisbee, softball, volleyball, and floor hockey
  • Tennis, bocce, croquet, horseshoes, golf, table tennis, bowling, shuffleboard and archery

Some activities involve equipment/facility rental.  A fee will be charged to cover the cost of equipment rental for activities such as skating, bowling, cross-country skiing, etc.

1507 Weight Training and Conditioning - Grades 10, 11, & 12 - 0.5 credit (Elective) 
This semester long course is for anyone interested in improving his or her overall physical strength, appearance and fitness level through a strength and conditioning program.  A base program for weights, flexibility and conditioning will be established with each with student working towards his/her own personal goals.  Special emphasis will be placed upon correct exercise and spotting techniques along with weight room safety.

1508 Advanced Weight Training and Conditioning - Grades 11 & 12 - 0.5 credit (Elective)
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of "B" in Weight Training and Conditioning.  Departmental approval is required.
This course is designed for students who wish to further their physical development in a more intensive program.  The "Bigger, Faster, Stronger" program will serve as the basis for the development of strength, flexibility, quickness and agility.  In addition to the physical training, students will gain knowledge in the areas of anatomy, sports nutrition and kinesthetic principles.  Students evaluate progress towards their physical fitness goals by documenting daily workouts and through periodic measurement and testing.  Supplementary learning activities may include speakers from local colleges and fitness clubs on the various aspects of physical training and sports nutrition/medicine.  In addition, opportunities to compete in power lifting will be explored.

1509 Physical Education Intern - Grade 12 - 0.5 credit (Elective)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Physical Education graduation requirements with a 3.0 average.  Demonstrated responsibility and a good disciplinary record.  Department chairperson approval is required.  This is a semester elective.
This course is designed for the student interested in the field of physical education and/or wellness education as a career.  The student will function as a teaching intern under close supervision of the physical education instructor during class and also assist with some of the administrative responsibilities such as facility preparation.  Required work by the student will include a daily journal, development and implementation of a personal fitness plan, and quarterly projects.
